Museums in Rotterdam

Rotterdam has almost thirty museums - many different kinds, but each one just as interesting. The Museumpark even combines five museums dedicated to art and architecture, including such internationally renowned museums as the Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Kunsthal. This makes it convenient for those wishing to visit several museums in one day. But Rotterdam also has museums devoted to some rather singular themes: the Dutch Tax and Customs Museum, the Natuurmuseum Rotterdam (museum of natural history) and the Toy-Toy Museum, just to name a few. All in all, Rotterdam's collection of museums can certainly be called comprehensive.
The Rotterdam museums are also geared towards children. The Museum of Ethnology Rotterdam, for instance, has a special fun-filled exhibition just for children: Het Reispaleis, a hotel accommodating guests from every corner of the globe. With a key to the hotel room, children can become detectives and search for clues about the person staying there. New in Rotterdam is Villa Zebra, a cultural experience especially for children: art studios for children, a "kids' café" and theatre, and temporary exhibits held throughout the year. And kids who want to know about ships and shipping will have to visit a special children's exhibit known as "Professor Plons" in the Maritime Museum.

Historical Museum

Rotterdam is often looked upon as a young and new city. This comes as no surprise, because the visitor will only see the latest developments. Rotterdam continuously changes at top speed.
And yet this new city has strong ties with the past. A fascinating past, cherished by the Historisch Museum. This municipal museum keeps as well as exhibits the past of the Maasstad (city on the river Maas), as Rotterdam is often called. Starting long ago, when Rotterdam was nothing more than a tiny settlement at a dam in the river Rotte, up to the present. History is a living and lively process that does not stop at a predetermined date. Today is tomorrow's past and the Historisch Museum will tell the story, no matter whether it's about a mediaeval coat of mail or Regilio Tuur's boxing shorts.
