De Zwethheul

Dinner at the Zwethheul (the strange name comes from the river 'Zweth') means very good food and wine at a rustic location just outside Rotterdam. The tables are large. If you are with just the two of you, forget about playing 'footsy'. On the other hand, this level of Michelin-star food deserves total self-centeredness. Let the different tastes melt in your mouth!

True: Michelin will never come by here. True: the food is okay, but nothing overly special. Nonetheless, restaurant Dizzy is definitely worth a visit; there has to be some reason why Dizzy is Rotterdam's all-time favourite jazz-café. The salads are okay, and they have a Chocolate Slut dessert to die for. More importantly Dizzy plays great music! There's live jazz every week, performed by various artists.

If it's too cold to eat in the romantic garden, rest assured: the inside of this historical former inn is equally charming. This rather small oasis of luxury still breathes the extravagance of way back when. The classy menu shows tempting options such as grilled tuna with lobster beignets and cuckoo with amarilles and prawns. Delicious!

Kip

Don"t step inside if you feel like eating simple chicken - you'd better head for KFC. In this yellow building they have plenty of chicken on the menu. They call it "hen" and fill it up with truffles. Not the thing you'd expect with a restaurant name like "Kip". It's all very French - not only the cuisine but also the interior: wooden tables and a large fireplace. And those hens; they're great! Also open for lunch if you are with a group larger than 15 persons.

A visit to Koriander is a perfect surprise. Ride your bike through the Maastunnel for extra adventure and end up in a green oasis. The owners say they've got the best terrace of the South of Rotterdam; we can confirm it's one of the most spectacular in town. Mobile heaters ensure you sit comfortably in the lush garden during cold Dutch summer nights. Big fires and candlesticks give the place a wonderful touch.

Enjoy supper in the garden (heaters will keep you warm) and taste a selection of small appetizers, or mix and match from the menu. Nul10 also serves daily menus (3 courses for 26 euro).

For dinner you can enjoy a daily changing menu with a perfect wine and food combination.

In the summer, Zenne moves its restaurant outdoors, in a large white tent in fact safe from wind and not-so-sunny weather. In the winter, Zenne serves you their tasty goodies in the Museum voor Volkenkunde. The menu is as always: about 10 Turkish cold starters followed by a warm starter followed by a fish, meat or veggie dish. Desserts for the daring. Don't even think of having heavy lunch or snacks before! Be sure to make a reservation or you may miss out on the smashing view of the Maas.

Zeezout

Never mind the businessmen who are on the phone all the time. They're probably calling their wives or mistresses to tell them how fantastic the food is; the chefs at Zeezout do magical tricks with the fish! Even non-fish eaters become converted. Try their fried oysters with sesame pastry or the grilled sea bass. We loved it so much that you can even wake us up in the middle of the night for this stuff!
